"Founder of iron industry in Taunton MA. Created the first furnace ever built in New England in what is now Raynham MA. He was very wealthy, owned homes in Taunton and Boston and was an upstanding member of the community. However he held religious views not in keeping with Puritan doctrines, and in 1638 he and 17 others (including Roger Williams) were banished from Massachusetts. They fled to Rhode Island which they purchased from the Indians."
